Agapanthus orientalis







Botanical Name: Agapanthus orientalis
Common Name: Agapanthus, Lily of the Nile
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Type: Broad leaved, evergreen perennial
Origin/Habitat: South Africa
Leaf Character: Alternate, simple, 2" w by 3' long, linear to strap shaped 1-3' long. Arching in parallel veins, aromatic
Flower Type: Terminal umbel, 2-3" across Tubular to campanulate ( 40 to 100  1" flowers per cluster)
Color: Violet blue
Period: Mid summer
Fruit: Persistant capsule (dehiscent) 
Exposure:  Full sun to Shade 
Water: Infrequent but thorough 
Remarks: Propagates by division or rhizome, seeds.  Stems up to 4'. Outstanding for its flowers, foliage and tolerance, used as a hedge, ground cover or container for tropical effect.
